The purpose of Veritas Volunteers is to serve the New Orleans community by participating in various service opportunities during the school year. Some of our projects for this year are Boo At the Zoo, Chef’s Charity, St. Alphonus School, and Green Charter School. Veritas Volunteers is open to all Dominican students.
The Dominican family reached across the country and oversees, sending Christmas cards signed with personal messages to a child in a Portland, Maine hospital and to US troops far away from home. At the Chefs’ Charity for Children to benefit St. Michael’s Special School, St. Mary’s Dominican High School Veritas Volunteers club members were volunteer servers at the annual event. Celebrity chefs conducted cooking demonstrations and benefit attendees enjoyed their culinary creations. Veritas Volunteers lead moderator is Dione Prince and Dawn Frick is moderator.
Food drives and cleaning flooded homes are among flood-relief responses by the St. Mary’s Dominican High School community. Students, faculty, and staff supported a collection drive that totaled $1,480 for distribution to relief programs. St. Mary’s Dominican High School Veritas Volunteers Club members were volunteer servers at the 39th Annual Chefs’ Charity for Children to benefit St. Michael’s Special School. Celebrity chefs conducted cooking demonstrations and the estimated 1,500 benefit attendees enjoyed their culinary creations.
The Veritas Volunteers Club at St. Mary’s Dominican High School collected approximately 50 blankets that will be distributed to a local shelter this winter. Seventeen Veritas Volunteer club members volunteered at Boo at the Zoo on October 24. At the end of September/early October, Veritas Volunteers and Student Ambassadors joined forces to collect candy to be donated to Boo at the Zoo. Over 20,000 pieces of candy were collected and donated.
On Saturday, May 9, Veritas Volunteers met with Susan, the founder of “Lara’s Gowns for Smiles” to cut out fabric pieces to make hospital gowns for children with long-term illnesses. The girls cut out fabric to make 35 hospital gowns. Some gowns will be sent to Children’s Hospital in New Orleans and others sent overseas. …Continue Reading
