One-hundred seventy-seven students received diplomas from St. Mary’s Dominican High School during the May 16 graduation ceremony held at St. Joseph Church. President Dr. Cynthia A. Thomas and Vice President, Principal Mrs. Carolyn Favre awarded the diplomas. Graduates were presented by Mrs. Wendy Grubb, Chair of the Guidance Department.
St. Mary’s Dominican High School Class of 2015 has received numerous honors and awards. In the class, 89 students merited the distinction of Honor graduate, earning GPAs of 3.5 or higher. Twelve students were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, including one student who merited two distinctions. As of May 16, graduates earned admission into 78 different colleges and universities throughout the country. They received 299 scholarships and awards totaling more than $13.1 million and anticipate well over $3.5 million in Taylor Opportunity Program for Students (TOPS) Scholarship Program awards.
As one of the 20 high schools whose students earned the most credit on the Spring Invitational advance-standing exams, Dominican was awarded the Golden Achievement Award for Spring Invitational 2015. This is the 25th time Dominican has received the award. The Class of 2015 completed 28,924 hours of community service. In fine arts, the graduates are among the most talented in the state. Athletically, members of this class participated in all nine sports offered at the school, breaking individual and school records. Titles captured included Louisiana High School Athletic Association All Academic Team Member, All District Team Member, district, metro and regional championships, state championship, and an individual state championship in tennis, and two in track and field.
The valedictorian was Margaret E. Webb. Webb, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Webb, will attend Rice University. A National Merit Scholarship Program Finalist and Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar, she served as president of Mu Alpha Theta and was a member of National Honor Society, Historical Film Society, Junior Engineering Technical Society, Intramurals, Veritas Volunteers, Pro Life Club, Quidditch Club, Science Club, Student Ambassadors, Cross Country, and Track and Field.
The salutatorians were Rachel N. Nguyen, Callie E. Oliver, and Kaitlyn E. Tholen.
Nguyen is the daughter of Liem and Noemi Nguyen. She was a National Merit Scholarship Program Finalist and an AP Scholar. She received a National Merit Walgreen Scholarship to the college of her choice. She will attend Kenyon College and received a Trustee Opportunity Scholarship to Kenyon College. Nguyen served as Biotechnology Club treasurer, Mu Alpha Theta vice president, Speech and Debate captain, and Science Club secretary. Other memberships included Junior Engineering Technical Society, Drama Club, Veritas Volunteers, Multicultural Club, National Honor Society, Quidditch, and Quiz Bowl.
Oliver, daughter of Steven and Marsha Oliver, is a National Merit Scholarship Program Finalist and an AP Scholar who will attend Tulane University. She received a Presidential Scholar Scholarship to Tulane University and a National Merit Tulane University Scholarship. Oliver was a member of the Biotechnology Club, Ecology Club, Foreign Language Club, Mu Alpha Theta, National Honor Society, and Quiz Bowl. For the Junior Classical League she was secretary/treasurer (2013-2014) and vice president (2014-2015).
Tholen is the daughter of Carl and Kerri Tholen. An AP Scholar, she will attend Tulane University that awarded her a Deans’ Honor Scholarship. A member of Christian Leadership Council, Drama Club, Historical Film Society, Key Club, Pro Life Club, and Mu Alpha Theta, she served as Junior Classical League historian (2013-2014)and president (2014-2015); and National Honor Society senior vice president.
The Mother Mary Magdalen O’Farrell, O.P. Service Award was presented to Catherine E. DeBuys, recognizing her outstanding, dedicated service to Dominican.
The Sister Mary Ambrose Reggio, O.P., Alumnae Award was presented to Lauren E. Guidroz, selected by her classmates as one who represents Dominican Spirit.
The American Legion Award, sponsored by the Henry Thomas Ross Post No. 137, was awarded to Rachel E. Hensley, who was selected by administration, faculty, staff and students for reflecting the qualities of courage, honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship, and service.
Eight graduates were selected by leadership, administration and faculty to receive the Veritas Award, the most prestigious Dominican award, in recognition of their outstanding accomplishments in Dominican’s four pillars of prayer, study, community and service. Award recipients were Maria T. Bordlee, Catherine E. DeBuys, Brooke L. Duplantier, Lauren E. Guidroz, Rachel E. Hensley, Shea A. Moreau, Anna A. Sheridan, and Jacquelyn R. Valdes.
