Adopt-A-Family 2015

Friday, December 11, the Dads’ Club of St. Mary’s Dominican High School arrived on campus to load vehicles with gifts collected for the school’s annual Adopt-A-Family program. Each year Catholic Charities reaches out to schools in the Greater New Orleans area to be a part of their annual Adopt-A-Family program. Dominican’s gifts and donations from the school’s students, faculty, and staff are given to families in the New Orleans area. Click here for the photo gallery!

Dear Dominican Community,

Last week at the CLC Christmas party, our members were asked, “Are you the chicken or the pig?” It’s a strange question, right! You see, the chicken contributes an egg out of his surplus. The pig, however, must truly make a sacrifice in order for a delicious Christmas breakfast to be served.

In this question, “Are you the chicken or the pig?” we begin to understand the true spirit of giving. True giving requires cost- not just the physical expense- but also our physical effort. Consider this. You went to the store probably after a long day at school and spent time picking out your gift. You earned the money to pay for the gift. You wrapped the gift. You even remembered to bring the gift to school AND helped load gifts into Alumnae Hall and onto trucks for delivery.

True giving is not always receiving the benefit of your actions. True giving is following the example of Christ himself on the cross and loving our neighbor without measuring the costs and seeking gratification for your good deed.

On behalf of the Christian Leadership Council and the Office of Dominican Catholic Identity, we’d wanted to thank EACH of you for adopting the true spirit of giving this Christmas! Thank you for your profound generosity – students, faculty, staff, and families who came together to provide gifts for over 200 people and 74 families this year.

A Toast of Praise to you, Dominican community! May the love of Christ continue to inspire within you and your families the true spirit of giving. We wish you and your loved ones a blessed Christmas!
