St. Mary’s Dominican High School was thrilled with a surprise visit this morning by Mrs. Gayle Benson who shared her faith journey at an assembly of students, faculty, and personnel. Recently, she returned from a week-long visit in Rome where she met and visited with Pope Francis. It marked her third Papal visit. “I was honored to be in the presence of a Holy Man who does so much for our country,” she said.
The owner of the NFL New Orleans Saints and the NBA New Orleans Pelicans is an accomplished business professional and philanthropist whose community ties are strong. Tracing her career path over the years, Mrs. Benson stressed the importance of not letting anyone tell you it cannot be done and to “always take the high road and do the right thing.” Acts of kindness are also important. “When we are kind, it does not cost us anything. We will never know what a person is experiencing, but your kindness will be felt.”
Faith has been a constant guide for Mrs. Benson who shared that faith shows the reality of what we hope for. God will take care of all of us as long as we remain constant and faithful to Him. Her closing advice to the students was a reminder – “Strive to continue learning and never lose that desire.”
The Student Council Executive Board presented Mrs. Benson with a bouquet of flowers and students were welcomed to ask Mrs. Benson any questions they had. The assembly ended with the Dominican Band playing, “When The Saints Go Marching In.”
