St. Mary’s Dominican High School has been awarded a STEM Library Lab Service Learning Program Grant for Dominican’s Coastal Roots Project this school year. The grant, which is through the Joe W. and Dorothy Dorsett Brown Foundation, allows the school to partner with the LSU Coastal Roots Program to grow native seedlings for habitat restoration.
“We will use the grant money to maintain our campus plant nursery and travel to the Bonnet Carre Spillway to plant our trees this winter,” said Dominican science teacher Joann Haydel. “In our Earth Science class, we learn about the geology of Louisiana and the impacts of coastal land loss to Southeast Louisiana. This program allows our students to be a part of the solution through restoring native habitat in our community.”
