Taking Flight in 8th Grade Physical Science Classes

Students in Mrs. Crissy Giacona’s 8th grade physical science honors classes had flying lessons with guest speaker Lt. Col. Floyd Miles of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP). For more than 80 years, CAP has been a champion of aerospace education across the nation. It is the official volunteer auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force and assists with search and rescue.

Lt. Col. Miles’ presentation covered the history and mechanics of flying and incorporated Dominican’s recently acquired flight simulator. Joining the class were sophomore Abigail Lips, C/MSgt (Cadet Master Sergeant) with the Civil Air Patrol, and senior Lauren Donofrio, who will soon have her pilot’s license.

“Using the flight simulator in the classroom enhances our students’ understanding of how engineering, science, physics, and math are necessary in order for a plane to fly,” said Mrs. Giacona.
